🏞️ History of Kaudulla National Park

Kaudulla’s central reservoir, the Kaudulla Tank, was built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD. It was part of Sri Lanka’s ancient irrigation system, supporting agriculture and human settlements. Over time, the area became forested and evolved into a rich natural habitat.

In 2002, Kaudulla was declared a national park to conserve its growing wildlife population—especially elephants—and to protect the restored reservoir and its ecosystem.
